Richard Grenell, former U.S. Ambassador and special envoy under President Donald Trump, has denied reports from opposition-linked Albanian media accusing him of lobbying for Prime Minister Edi Rama.
According to the reports, Grenell allegedly tried to include a visit to Tirana in Donald Trump Jr.’s travel schedule, where he would meet with Rama. The media suggested this was part of an undisclosed lobbying effort.
Grenell responded on social media, calling the story “a total lie” and asking Alfred Lela, the Democratic Party’s communications chief, to issue a correction.
“I realize you are days away from an important election. I understand emotions are high. I have watched your election silently from the sidelines because Albania is an important and trusted NATO ally of America (and one of my favorite countries to visit & vacation in). But this story from your outlet is A TOTAL LIE. It should be corrected immediately and removed if you care about facts.”
Donald Trump Jr. backed Grenell by reposting the statement on Twitter.
Prime Minister Edi Rama also commented during a public event in Petrelë, saying the Trump family was forced to respond to what he called “the opposition’s madness.”
