China has accused the United States of abusing tariffs and warned it will oppose any international economic agreements detrimental to its interests.
Beijing has escalated its rhetoric in the increasingly tense trade war with the U.S., vowing to take “firm and reciprocal countermeasures” against any party involved in such deals.
This statement follows reports that the Trump administration is preparing to pressure countries seeking tariff reductions or exemptions from the U.S. to limit trade with China. President Trump has also imposed comprehensive tariffs on many nations, excluding only China, which faces 145% tariffs on its exports to the U.S. In response, China has levied similar tariffs of 125% on American goods.
China also alleged that the U.S. has misused the concept of “equivalence” in trade tariffs, forcing countries into reciprocal tariff negotiations. Beijing reiterated its readiness to defend its rights and interests and strengthen solidarity with international allies.
In a further move, China has requested an informal meeting of the UN Security Council to denounce U.S. practices and highlight the negative impact of tariffs on global peace and development.
China has warned that the Trump administration’s tariff policies could trigger a global recession, destabilize financial markets, and increase investor concerns about Chinese assets.
