BELGRADE, Serbia – More than 100,000 people gathered in central Belgrade on Saturday in one of the largest protests yet against government corruption, continuing a wave of demonstrations that has gripped Serbia since November 2024.
The near-daily protests have become the biggest challenge to President Aleksandar Vu?i?’s 13-year rule, with demonstrators demanding accountability over corruption and negligence.
Saturday’s protest, called “15 for 15,” was named in memory of the 15 people who died in the Novi Sad tragedy on 1 November 2024. Protesters observed a minute of silence to honour the victims.
Students lead calls for justice
University students have been at the forefront of the movement, blocking faculty buildings and refusing to attend classes until their demands are met. Many Serbians blame government corruption and poor enforcement of building safety regulations for the November disaster.
Despite four months of protests, demonstrators say the government has failed to meet their demands. They are calling for the full release of documents related to the reconstruction project and legal action against those responsible.
With no sign of a resolution, the protests are expected to continue, keeping pressure on Vu?i?’s administration.
