Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj is challenging his detention as an appeals court reviews his request for a reduced security measure. The Special Court of Appeals held a session Wednesday, with a ruling expected Thursday at 10 a.m.
Veliaj’s lawyers, Ermir Beta and Artur Selmani, have requested bail, arguing he poses no risk of interfering with evidence.
Veliaj was arrested Feb. 10 on corruption and money laundering charges filed by Albania’s Special Prosecution Against Corruption, or SPAK. Prosecutors say he and his wife, Ajola Xoxa, directed municipal funds and contractor payments to organizations and individuals allegedly under Xoxa’s control.
Veliaj denies the charges, calling the arrest unjust. His legal team says the case is politically motivated.
The ruling will determine whether Veliaj remains in custody as the investigation continues.
