A huge corruption scandal has rocked Albania’s Agricultural University, with investigators uncovering rigged public tenders worth €900k. Authorities have imposed 24 security measures, including arrests, house detention, and movement restrictions, as part of an expanding probe into fraudulent contracts.
Fake Bids and Backroom Deals
Officials allegedly worked with handpicked companies to fake bids, inflate costs, and steer public funds into pre-determined winners’ hands. Some contracts were even signed before tenders were announced.
Investigators say procurement rules were deliberately bent, with insiders manipulating project specs to fit selected businesses. The companies involved are accused of submitting fake offers to make it appear as if there was competition, while in reality, the deals were fixed from the start.
Wiretaps and Secret Surveillance
Authorities used phone taps, undercover monitoring, and forensic financial checks to expose the scheme. Evidence points to a coordinated effort by university officials and private firms to siphon off public money.
The court has ordered pre-trial detention for key figures, house arrests for others, and mandatory police check-ins for the rest. More action is expected as the investigation widens.
Albania’s anti-corruption drive is stepping up—this latest bust shows that big players are finally being held to account.
