Albania’s top prosecutor has vowed to go after election crimes, promising fast and effective investigations.
Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAK) chief Altin Dumani said Friday that his team is stepping up efforts to tackle election fraud, including illegal campaign funding.
“We are responding to international concerns about the election process. Parliament has told us to take a more proactive approach, especially on cases exposed in the media before, during, and after elections,” Dumani said.
Speaking at a meeting in Tirana alongside top officials, he stressed the need for speed.
“When election crimes, especially illegal funding, are dealt with on time, it has a big impact. But if investigations drag on, even if justice is served, people lose trust,” Dumani warned.
Albania’s general prosecutor Olsian Çela and election commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi also attended the meeting. Celibashi said efforts are in place to ensure fair elections on May 11.
“We are doing everything to meet the standards of a country aiming to join Europe,” he said.
Key election deadlines are approaching next week, including party registration, candidate lists, and the end of diaspora voter sign-ups.
