Top opposition official, Lulzim Basha has hit back at Edi Rama’s recent comments, blasting the Prime Minister as “autocratic” and “anti-state” following his defense of the chairwoman of the Legal Affairs Committee.
Rama, speaking to his parliamentary group, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the justice system but also criticized the judicial system for not notifying the chairwoman of the parliamentary legal affairs committee, Klodilta Bushka about the fact that she was being investigated. “She found out from the TV that she was being investigated—this is unacceptable,” Rama said, referring to the chairwoman’s surprise after her name appeared in a lengthy indictment. He defended her, pointing out that she hadn’t been questioned or heard by the authorities despite being listed in the charges.
But Basha wasn’t having it. He accused Rama of using the situation to distract from the real issues. “While everyday Albanians were working to support their families, Rama began his day with attacks on prosecutors and judges,” Basha said. “Like Berisha’s best student, he’s using his administration to surround the courts and turn his party into a battalion against justice, which is now proving that no one is above the law.”
Basha went on to call Rama’s attempts to undermine SPAK and the judicial system “mafia-style blackmail” and “autocratic, anti-state behavior.” He accused the Prime Minister of avoiding accountability and demanding evidence like a judge, instead of acting as a responsible politician.
Rama’s defense of the chairwoman and criticism of the judicial system did little to sway Basha, who remained adamant that Rama was working to block progress on justice reforms. “Instead of supporting real justice, Rama is trying to undermine it at every turn,” Basha charged.
He urged all honest Albanians to reject Rama’s actions with their vote. “Stand with SPAK, reject those blocking justice, and end impunity at the highest levels. Albania deserves more!”
