Discrimination is still present in Albania, but it’s no longer as widespread, according to sociologist Maria Dojçe. She explains that today, societal issues are more about people’s status, profession, or education, rather than gender, ethnicity, or religion.
“Gender discrimination is nearly gone now. Women have really advanced, especially in politics and careers. In families, women are now making decisions alongside men,” Dojçe said.
She also praised Albania’s religious harmony, saying there’s no ethnic or racial discrimination in the country. “It’s a model for the region,” she added.
To help tackle any lingering discrimination, Korça has had a Commissioner for Protection Against Discrimination for seven years, and many cases have been resolved.
