Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded to criticism of his “Sovereign State of the Bektashi Order” proposal, saying it will not divide Albania and fully respects the country’s laws.
In a social media post, Rama rejected claims that the initiative would break up the state. “We are not creating a state within a state,” he said, explaining that the Bektashi community would be granted special status but would follow Albania’s Constitution and laws. The new entity would not have police, customs, or taxes.
Rama first mentioned the idea in September, saying the Bektashi community would receive special recognition within Albania. He also spoke about the proposal during the 95th anniversary of the World Bektashi Headquarters in Albania.
The Prime Minister also discussed issues like judicial reforms, voter registration for Albanians living abroad, and healthcare.
