Third legal blow leaves Albania plan on the brink
Giorgia Meloni’s migration deal with Albania has suffered another major setback after an Italian appeals court ordered the immediate return of 43 migrants sent to the Gjadër camp.
Judges in Rome ruled that Bangladesh and Egypt cannot be automatically considered “safe countries” under EU law, blocking Italy’s attempt to fast-track deportations. The case now moves to the European Court of Justice, with a ruling expected on February 25.
This is the third time courts have overturned Meloni’s plan, despite legal tweaks to keep it afloat. With each ruling, the agreement looks increasingly doomed.
