Albania has launched its overseas voter registration process ahead of the May 11 parliamentary elections, marking a significant milestone in the country’s electoral history.
For the first time, Albanians living abroad will have the chance to vote in the national elections. The registration process, which opened today, will run until March 4. This initiative allows the Albanian diaspora to take part in shaping the country’s future.
The registration can be completed entirely online, either through the Central Election Commission’s website or a dedicated mobile app. Voters must create a personal account, provide the required information, and upload proof of identity and residence. Once approved, voters will receive their ballots by post.
State Election Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi confirmed that applications have already been received from across the globe, with requests coming in from nearly every continent. He added that if there are any missing documents, applicants will have the opportunity to reapply until the March 4 deadline.
In a statement, the Speaker of Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, urged emigrants to register. “It’s crucial that you exercise your right to vote, ensuring Albania continues its path toward Western standards,” she said.
Albania has over 3.7 million registered voters, with nearly half of the population living abroad. The government has committed to covering the postage costs for sending out the ballots, underlining its determination to make this process as accessible as possible. However, opposition parties, particularly the Democratic Party, have raised concerns over the potential use of electronic voting. They are advocating for a more limited approach, initially restricting electronic voting and counting to a few pilot centres.
As the registration period continues, the real question is how many emigrants will participate in this historic election.
