Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has criticised the Albanian government’s plan to reduce energy prices, saying it benefits wealthy households while ignoring those who are struggling.
Berisha called the policy “a deception,” arguing that cutting prices for those who use a lot of electricity unfairly favors the rich. “This decision benefits high energy consumers, including Prime Minister Edi Rama. It’s an example of extreme inequality and hypocrisy,” he told reporters.
He urged the government to lower energy prices for low income households and adjust rates based on wages and pensions. Berisha also proposed reducing costs for businesses, especially smaller ones, to support economic growth.
“Electricity prices in 2013 were much lower,” he said, adding that recent increases have been unfair and have hurt ordinary citizens.
Berisha promised that the Democratic Party would introduce reforms to help people escape poverty by changing how national income is distributed.
The issue of energy costs has become a major concern in Albania, as rising prices continue to impact households and businesses across the country.
