Albania has secured a stronger position in European security with a new partnership agreement signed on Wednesday in Brussels. The agreement, dubbed the “Partnership for Security and Defense,” enhances Albania’s role in EU defense discussions and reinforces its contributions as a NATO member.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, attended the signing ceremony. Also present were Albania’s Foreign Minister Igli Hasani and Defense Minister Pirro Vengu, who signed the document on behalf of the Albanian government.
Kaja Kallas emphasized Albania’s growing importance in regional security. “We are committed to deepening our support for Albania’s armed forces. This partnership strengthens Albania’s participation in European security discussions and expands our cooperation in areas like cybersecurity, disinformation, and counter-terrorism,” Kallas said.
The agreement facilitates enhanced information exchange between Albania and the EU, paving the way for greater collaboration on defense and security. It also underscores Albania’s pivotal role in NATO and its growing engagement in broader European defense initiatives.
The signing ceremony took place ahead of the EU–Western Balkans summit, where leaders are expected to focus on advancing regional integration, strengthening political ties, and deepening security cooperation. Prime Minister Rama expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued attention to the Western Balkans, noting that the agreement aligns with Albania’s long-term goal of greater European integration.
This agreement marks a significant step for Albania in solidifying its position in both EU defense policy and NATO’s collective security framework.
