Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to reject challenges to her government’s controversial plan to transfer migrants to Albania. The plan, which would see migrants moved to Italian-run detention centres in Albania, has been blocked by Italian courts, frustrating the government.
Ahead of an EU leaders’ summit, Meloni called for clarity, accusing recent judicial decisions of being driven by “ideological motives.” She warned that if the ECJ upholds the ruling, it could undermine repatriation efforts across the EU, especially with new asylum rules not set to take effect until 2026.
“This is a worrying and unacceptable prospect that must be stopped in its tracks,” Meloni declared, stressing the impact on Italy and EU migration policies.
