Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to joining the European Union, calling the process a “long-awaited marriage.” Speaking at the Third Intergovernmental Conference with the EU, Rama stressed that opening negotiation chapters is vital for Albania’s transformation.
“We’ve been waiting for this for decades,” Rama said, highlighting the importance of Albania’s future in Europe. While acknowledging that the road ahead won’t be easy, he emphasised that the negotiation process will help strengthen the country’s legal system and solidify the rule of law.
Rama also quoted 19th-century poet Naim Frashëri, stating, “The sun rises where it sets,” to underline Albania’s natural alignment with the West.
The Prime Minister reassured that Albania is ready for the next step in its EU journey.
At the same conference, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos praised Albania’s progress in its bid for membership. She welcomed the opening of Chapter 6, which covers foreign relations, describing it as a key development for the country’s integration.
Kos noted that the opening of Chapter 6 strengthens Albania’s ties to the EU’s foreign policy, benefiting both Albania and the wider Western Balkans region.
However, she urged Albania to stay focused on reforms, stressing that they are crucial for the country’s long-term economic and social development.
The Commissioner also emphasised the need for national unity, calling for cooperation between Albania’s government, parliament, and civil society to drive the success of the EU negotiations.
Kos concluded by reaffirming the EU’s support for Albania’s integration process, noting that the opening of Chapter 6 strengthens the country’s position in the region.
