Former democrat leader, Lulzim Basha marked the 14th anniversary of Albania’s visa-free travel in the EU. The move, which came into effect in 2010, allowed Albanians to travel freely within European countries.
At the time, Basha was Albania’s Foreign Minister, and he took to social media to reflect on the achievement. “Fourteen years ago, the dream of free movement for Albanians became a reality,” he wrote. “This was made possible by hard work and dedication.”
Basha highlighted the personal impact of the decision, which allowed Albanians to reunite with family members and be treated with dignity across Europe.
Looking ahead, Basha said the next goal is to secure visa-free travel with the United States. “Our mission now is to remove visa barriers with the US,” he added. “Just as we succeeded with the EU, we can do the same with the US.”
The Democratic Party leader emphasized that this goal could only be reached by tackling corruption and crime, and creating a government that works for all Albanians. “We are committed to fighting corruption and crime, and ensuring prosperity for everyone, not just politicians,” he said.
In 2010, the EU’s decision to lift visa requirements was seen as a major milestone for Albania’s integration into Europe. Basha continues to celebrate this success, while pushing for even greater freedoms for the Albanian people.
