The Albanian opposition in North Macedonia, led by the European Front coalition, has kicked off a new protest called the “Language Guard” to oppose what they call political moves undermining the Constitution and the Ohrid Agreement.
Hundreds have gathered outside the Constitutional Court in Skopje, vowing to stay there until December 11, when the controversial language law will be reviewed. The law has sparked fierce debate, with the opposition accusing the government of diminishing the Albanian language, while the government and ruling Albanian parties accuse the opposition of stoking ethnic tensions.
As tensions rise, all eyes are on Skopje, where the battle over language rights could have lasting effects on the country’s political landscape.
