Rom`anian President Klaus Iohannis has pledged that Romania will remain a strong EU and NATO ally, after the Constitutional Court annulled the presidential election results.
“I will stay in office until the next president is elected,” Iohannis said, adding, “Romania is stable, safe, and reliable — for the economy, investors, and our allies in the EU and NATO.”
The scandal began when right-wing extremist Calin Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round of voting in late November. However, the Supreme Court intervened, annulling the results over election irregularities.
The court’s decision followed claims from Romania’s secret service, which said the country was targeted by a “Russian hybrid attack.” Georgescu, a pro-Russian figure, allegedly used social media platforms like TikTok and Telegram to spread his message through coordinated accounts, algorithms, and paid ads.
Georgescu’s unexpected lead had already surprised many, with a runoff against center-right candidate Elena Lasconi scheduled for December 8. But now, following the court ruling, the election has been cancelled and the process will begin again.
