Romania’s High Court has declared the first round of presidential elections null and void, demanding a fresh vote after a major scandal.
The decision came after President Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence documents suggesting Russian involvement in a campaign to promote far-right candidate Calin Georgescu on social media platforms like TikTok and Telegram.
Georgescu, who failed to report any campaign expenses, led the race following the first round on November 24. He was due to face off against pro-EU candidate Elena Lasconi in a runoff on Sunday.
The court’s ruling means that the entire electoral process must be redone. The Romanian government will now set a new election date and revise the timeline for the necessary steps.
