Albanian President Bajram Begaj and Prime Minister Edi Rama have condemned a recent terrorist attack on Kosovo’s Ibër-Lepenc water canal, which serves as critical infrastructure for the country. The explosion, which took place in northern Kosovo, has sparked concerns over both national security and regional stability.
In a statement, President Begaj expressed his full support for Kosovo’s efforts in responding to the attack. He held a phone call with Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani, where he strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a direct threat to Kosovo’s national security. Begaj also reiterated Albania’s commitment to supporting Kosovo as it investigates the incident.
Prime Minister Rama also condemned the attack, calling it a “serious crime” that not only threatens the lives of Kosovo’s citizens but also disrupts efforts to normalise relations in the region. He urged the European Union to lift any remaining sanctions on Kosovo and called for a new dialogue format between Kosovo and Serbia, as the current framework has failed to produce meaningful results.
The explosion at the Ibër-Lepenc Canal is believed to have been aimed at damaging the water supply that is essential for cooling Kosovo’s power plants, Kosovo A and Kosovo B. Local authorities have classified the attack as an act of terrorism.
Both Begaj and Rama are calling for swift action to bring those responsible to justice, with Rama stressing the need for international support to ensure accountability.
