Radmila Sekerinska, former Minister of Defense of North Macedonia, has been appointed NATO’s new Deputy Secretary General, the alliance announced on Tuesday. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed the appointment.
Rutte expressed confidence in Sekerinska’s ability to contribute to NATO’s mission, stating, “She truly believes in NATO, understands the work needed to be part of the alliance, and knows what it means to be a full member.”
Sekerinska, who has held prominent roles in public service, will officially take up her new position at the end of the year. She previously served as Deputy Minister for European Integration and as Minister of Defense during North Macedonia’s accession to NATO in 2020.
She will succeed Boris Ruge, who has served as interim Deputy Secretary General since the departure of Mircea Geoana, who stepped down to run for president of Romania.
