Albania has launched a new anti-corruption strategy with support from the European Union, aiming to strengthen transparency and accountability at all levels of government by 2030.
The Cross-Sectoral Anti-Corruption Strategy, introduced Monday in Tirana, lays out commitments from Albanian institutions to curb corruption through targeted measures centered on prevention, enforcement, and public awareness. Seen as a milestone in Albania’s push to align with European standards, the strategy is expected to be a critical step as the country advances in its EU accession process.
Minister of State for Public Administration and Anti-Corruption Adea Pirdeni said the initiative will enhance governance through a three-part approach. “The strategy aims to tackle corruption’s main challenges through prevention, enforcement, and awareness,” she said, adding that the plan marks the start of “faster-paced reforms to reshape anti-corruption efforts nationwide.”
Pirdeni said that the strategy’s approval coincides with a significant moment for Albania, as the country opens negotiations on its first cluster of EU accession chapters. She described this stage as a new chapter in Albania’s journey, with the strategy intended to drive the nation toward more robust governance practices.
The new anti-corruption plan focuses on promoting integrity and transparency in both public and private sectors, aiming to improve efficiency in public services. According to Pirdeni, Albania is determined to adopt European governance standards across its state institutions.
European Union Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato also addressed the gathering, pledging the EU’s support for Albania’s efforts to strengthen governance. Officials say the strategy will improve coordination among agencies responsible for tackling corruption, creating a more unified approach.
By implementing a range of systemic reforms, Albania hopes to uphold high standards of accountability and integrity, with officials expecting this strategy to serve as a foundation for long-term transparency.
As Albania advances toward its EU membership goals, the government hopes the 2024-2030 strategy will help shape a more transparent and accountable administration, demonstrating the country’s commitment to European values.
