Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that Albanian emigrants will be able to vote in next year’s parliamentary elections, marking a significant step for the diaspora. Speaking in Thessaloniki, he urged expatriates to participate, promising that Albania would join the European Union by 2030.
“This is the first time you will vote, exercising your right here at home,” Rama said, addressing the crowd. He acknowledged the long road to making this promise a reality, emphasizing that it required cooperation from various political parties to amend election laws.
Rama urged emigrants to support Albania’s aspirations, stating, “You have requested your vote from Greece to ensure Albania becomes a full EU member by 2030.” He highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for Albanians abroad and fostering stronger ties with their homeland.
In addition to political participation, Rama invited Albanians working in the tourism sector in Greece to return home, assuring them of competitive wages and lower taxes. “Real wages in the private sector in Albania are fully competitive with the region, and in tourism, they match those in Greece,” he noted.
Rama encouraged those with ancestral homes to invest in agritourism, suggesting that opening guesthouses could yield higher returns than remaining abroad. “Come to Albania, where you’ll earn the same salary, pay fewer taxes, and be closer to your roots,” he said.
