Oct 30, 2024 – Tirana International Airport (TIA) reported a significant increase in passenger traffic, welcoming over 8.32 million travelers in the first nine months of 2024, a 55% rise compared to the same period last year, according to Travel and Tour World.
September alone saw 1.1 million passengers, marking a 47% increase year-on-year. This surge emphasizes Albania’s growing appeal as a tourist destination, as the country attracts both leisure and business travelers.
Budget airlines dominate flights
Wizz Air led the flight operations at TIA, accounting for 53.2% of all flights from January to September 2024. Ryanair followed with 22.1%, while Air Albania held a 3.7% share. The prevalence of low-cost carriers reflects the demand for affordable travel options to Albania and across Europe.
Tourism growth fuels economy
The influx of travelers aligns with a broader tourism boom in Albania, which saw a 17% increase in foreign visitors during the same period, totaling 9.7 million. This growth contributes to the country’s economy, with Tirana emerging as a central hub for tourists exploring the Balkans.
Minister of Tourism Mirela Kumbaro noted that the rise in tourism underscores Albania’s potential as a leading destination, highlighting its scenic landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
Looking ahead
Tirana Airport continues to expand its infrastructure to meet growing passenger numbers. As demand increases, further airline expansion is expected, enhancing connectivity and accessibility to Albania.
In 2023, the airport welcomed 7.26 million passengers, achieving a 40% rise from the previous year. With its strategic location and burgeoning tourism industry, Tirana Airport is poised for continued growth.
