Oct 24, 2024 – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed her commitment to a controversial agreement aimed at accommodating migrants in Albania. Speaking at the 80th anniversary celebration of the Italian newspaper Il Tempo, Meloni recognized the significant challenges ahead but expressed her determination to continue with the plan.
The Italy-Albania deal, which seeks to house migrants in Albania, has sparked heated debate in Italy. Critics argue that it may violate constitutional principles and pose economic risks. “We face serious challenges in implementing this agreement, but we are committed to moving forward,” Meloni said firmly.
Her comments come as some lawmakers and European Parliament members call for a review of the protocol. Meloni emphasized that the agreement has been approved by the Italian Parliament and criticized any attempts to seek its condemnation in Europe. “I will not allow a model we believe is compliant with Italian and European law to be dismantled,” she stated.
Meloni also highlighted the issue of illegal immigration, calling it a threat to legal migration. “No country can ignore the management of migratory flows and the fight against illegal immigration,” she added.
