The former President of Albania and chairman of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, was arrested today following an order by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organised Crime (SPAK). The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption, non-declaration of assets, and money laundering.
SPAK has reportedly been conducting a thorough property investigation into Meta’s wealth. While no official charges have been confirmed yet, it is believed that these financial irregularities led to today’s arrest. Meta is also under investigation for his involvement in the high-profile CEZ-DIA case, which is linked to dubious energy deals.
In mid-June, Meta appeared before SPAK investigators for over three hours, during which he was questioned extensively about his family’s financial assets. According to Meta, he has never personally handled property or financial matters, shifting the responsibility to his wife, Monika Kryemadhi. She too is under investigation by SPAK regarding property issues.
As part of today’s developments, SPAK has also imposed a court obligation on Mrs. Kryemadhi to appear before authorities.
Meta’s legal team has not yet issued an official statement regarding his arrest. However, this marks a significant development in Albania’s fight against high-level corruption, a matter closely watched by both the Albanian public and the international community. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
