Oct 14, 2024 – Leaders from the Western Balkans will convene today for the Berlin Process Summit, aimed at enhancing regional cooperation, with discussions set to focus on the common regional market, green agenda, and energy connectivity. Launched in 2014 to strengthen ties between the Western Balkans and the European Union, the Berlin Process has faced slow implementation of agreements, particularly regarding the free movement of goods and people.
The summit will be divided into two sessions, addressing cooperation within the regional market, followed by discussions on energy and connectivity between the states. A significant outcome is expected with the launch of the Common Regional Market 2, continuing efforts to improve economic integration. Progress has been made in recent years, including reduced roaming tariffs in 2023, a result of the Paris summit in 2016.
Youth cooperation is also high on the agenda, with representatives from the Youth Forum and Civil Society set to participate in discussions. The Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), established after the Paris summit, is often seen as a positive example of regional collaboration.
While implementation has been slow, the Berlin Process remains a key platform for fostering cooperation and promoting stability in the Western Balkans, as the region continues its path toward EU integration.
