Oct 7, 2024 – The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to American researchers Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their pivotal discovery of microRNA, a key mechanism that regulates gene activity. This discovery is considered a significant advancement in understanding how organisms develop and function, according to the Nobel Assembly.
Victor Ambros conducted his research at Harvard University and currently serves as a professor of natural science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Gary Ruvkun’s research took place at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he holds a professorship in genetics. Thomas Perlmann, Secretary-General of the Nobel Committee, highlighted their contributions to the field.
This recognition follows last year’s award, which honored Hungarian-American scientist Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman for their work on mRNA vaccines that played a crucial role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Nobel Prize includes a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million), originating from a bequest by Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prestigious accolade.
The announcement marks the beginning of this year’s Nobel Prize season, with further awards to be announced throughout the week. The prizes for physics, chemistry, and literature will follow, with the Nobel Peace Prize set to be revealed on Friday. The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will conclude the announcements on October 14.
The laureates are expected to receive their awards during a ceremony on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
