Oct 5 – During a visit to Poland, Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti warned that the peace and democracy enjoyed in the Balkans for the past 25 years are at risk if Russia prevails in Ukraine. In an interview with The Associated Press, Kurti cautioned that a stronger Russia would embolden Serbia, threatening not only Kosovo but also Bosnia, Montenegro, and potentially North Macedonia.
Kurti, who has led Kosovo since 2021, urged the West to remain united in its support for Ukraine, emphasising that Serbia could become a regional hegemon under Russian influence. “These 25 years of peace and freedom in the Balkans are unprecedented in our history,” Kurti stated, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia remain high, with talks to normalise relations stalled and NATO peacekeepers increasing their presence at the border following a deadly shootout in 2023. Kurti pointed to Serbian ambitions, recalling the devastating wars in the 1990s as former Yugoslavia fractured.
Kurti’s visit to Poland coincides with the country’s preparations to assume the rotating EU presidency in January 2025. Kosovo continues to seek EU membership, though five member states still do not recognise its independence. While acknowledging recent progress, Kurti stressed that full recognition remains the ultimate goal.
