Oct 3, 2024 – Albania and Italy have reaffirmed their long-standing cooperation in the field of justice, following a high-level meeting between Albanian Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja and his Italian counterpart, Carlo Nordio, in Tirana. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral efforts to combat organised crime, tackle international terrorism, and support Albania’s EU integration.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed a range of issues aimed at deepening cooperation between the neighbouring nations. A joint statement highlighted mutual priorities, including judicial reform, transnational crime, and the fight against money laundering. Italy also reiterated its support for Albania’s bid to join the European Union.
Manja, speaking after the talks, described the meeting as a significant step towards taking judicial collaboration to the next level. “We reaffirmed the excellent relations between Albania and Italy, and our shared commitment to the rule of law,” he said. “This is a reflection of the political will of both governments to strengthen these ties and face common challenges together.”
The ministers agreed to prioritise mutual legal assistance in combating organised crime and human trafficking, as well as enhancing cooperation in prison administration and personnel training. Italy’s Nordio praised the meeting as a key moment for reinforcing the friendship between the two countries. “This visit is an important milestone in our ongoing collaboration,” he stated.
The meeting comes at a crucial time for Albania as it continues its path towards EU membership. Italy remains one of the strongest supporters of Albania’s accession and has committed to assisting the country in meeting European standards, particularly in the areas of governance and judicial reform.
