Oct 3, 2024 — The Cold War Museum in Gjirokastër stands out as one of the top tourist attractions for 2024, drawing a steady flow of visitors keen to explore its historical significance.
According to the Directorate of Tourism, Heritage, and Sports in Gjirokastër, the museum has seen an impressive influx of both domestic and international tourists since the start of the year. From January to the end of September, it welcomed 53,638 visitors, with many coming from Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This surge reflects a growing interest in the region’s rich historical context, particularly the Cold War era.
Housed in a former war shelter built in the early 1970s, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the past. The structure itself, a concrete relic of its time, enhances the experience, transporting visitors to an era of political tension and intrigue. Guests are particularly fascinated by the museum’s authentic artifacts, which tell the story of the communist leadership that once operated in the region.
The museum’s location near the vibrant Bazaar further boosts its appeal, attracting tourists looking to explore Gjirokastër’s broader cultural offerings.
