Oct 2, 2024 – Albania’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party has lodged a formal complaint against 73 MPs of the ruling Socialist Party, including Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing them of obstructing justice by failing to enforce decisions made by the Constitutional Court.
The opposition alleges that these officials committed two offenses: obstructing the execution of court rulings and not acting on these decisions without valid reasons. This issue is closely tied to deputy Olta Xhaçka, who is under scrutiny for her potential conflict of interest. Xhaçka’s husband was granted the status of a strategic investor, allowing him to build a hotel on Albania’s south coast. Critics argue this relationship could influence her legislative decisions.
Democrat MPs claim that the ruling party’s actions undermine democracy and erode public trust in the judicial system. They contend that officials have actively worked against the implementation of two court decisions that could impact Xhaçka’s political standing.
In response, the Socialist majority has sought an opinion from the Venice Commission regarding the legality of Xhaçka’s parliamentary mandate, with a meeting scheduled for December 6-7. (Tir-Fax)
