Albania’s Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has announced that some of its prosecutors’ email addresses were hacked on March 12.
SPAK clarified in an official statement that its internal system was not compromised, and an attempt to hack the email of SPAK head Altin Dumani was unsuccessful.
The statement also revealed that the individuals responsible for the intrusion and the subsequent distribution of information to third parties were identified and arrested within 24 hours.
“The Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime received information on March 12, 2025, that there was an illegal intrusion into the email addresses of special prosecutors. Thanks to security measures, the internal system of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), which remains uncompromised, was not accessed,” the statement said.
SPAK confirmed that only the email addresses of some prosecutors were affected, and not the institution’s overall IT system. The perpetrators were able to obtain some information but did not gain access to investigative files.
An intensive investigation led by SPAK, with the involvement of the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH) and SPAK’s Expertise Sector, resulted in the identification and arrest of two individuals: the one who carried out the email intrusion and the one who disseminated the information to third parties. Equipment used in the intrusion and downloaded files were seized.
