Acting Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has stated that Kosovo has no “Plan B” for its path to European Union (EU) membership.
Speaking in Brussels at an event hosted by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) on “Kosovo’s Path to the EU: Advanced Democracy, Security, and Economic Growth,” Kurti said that EU enlargement should be strategic, merit-based, and realistic.
He argued that those aligning with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and upholding EU values should be reviewed and not kept under restrictive EU measures.
“The time has come for Kosovo and the EU to intensify joint efforts to overcome obstacles in Kosovo’s EU accession process. Namely, to initiate the questionnaire for Kosovo, assessing our institutional and legal capacities for EU membership; and to prepare a merit-based opinion on Kosovo’s EU candidate status,” Kurti emphasized.
Kurti asserted that Kosovo has demonstrated itself as a reliable EU partner and strongly believes in its European future.
“It is time for the EU to show that it sees Kosovo as part of its future. This will further strengthen our commitment to the European agenda, making the path towards the EU more tangible,” Kurti added.
He stated that Kosovo’s EU candidate status is overdue.
