Insurance companies in Albania paid out approximately 1.2 billion lek (€10.4 million) in claims during January and February of this year, according to the latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority.
Gross claims payments saw a slight decrease of 1.28% compared to the same period in 2024. The majority of the paid claims were in the motor insurance sector, specifically for domestic Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL).
The non-life insurance category accounted for the largest share of paid claims, at 87.42% of the total. Compensation Fund payments represented 6%, while life insurance claims made up 6.5%. Payments from the Compensation Fund were lower than in the corresponding period of 2024. The Compensation Fund for transport sector damages in 2025 stands at 250 million lek.
The total number of paid claims in the first two months of the year was over 12,000, an increase of 626 compared to the previous year. Non-life insurers paid 11,632 claims, and life insurers paid 479.
Within life insurance, debtor life products had the highest claims payments. In the non-life sector, after motor insurance, the largest claims were for land vehicles, followed by health insurance and then fire and natural disaster coverage.
Conversely, outstanding claims – those unpaid, under assessment, or subject to legal proceedings – have increased.
Official statistics indicate a 21.1% decrease in road accidents in the first two months of the year compared to 2024. This reduction in accidents is a contributing factor to the slight decrease in overall claims payments.
