China is responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff announcements with additional tariffs of 84% on selected U.S. imports, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced.
The new tariffs triggered a fresh downturn in U.S. markets, with the S&P 500 immediately falling by 1.5%. Beijing had previously condemned the U.S. President’s trade actions as “threatening and coercive” and “mistake after mistake.”
The Chinese government reiterated its intent to retaliate, warning of consequences for Washington. A White Paper emphasized that Beijing will not back down in the trade war and stressed the counterproductive nature of trade conflicts.
The Foreign Ministry reiterated on Wednesday that China will take “firm and forceful” measures to protect its interests, following the implementation of total net tariffs of 104% on Chinese imports to the U.S. It urged Washington to cease “arrogant behavior and bullying.”
“If the U.S. truly wants to resolve the problem through dialogue and negotiation, it should demonstrate an attitude of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.
