Donald Trump has suggested that the U.S. take control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently occupied by Russian forces.
The White House confirmed that U.S. ownership of Ukraine’s nuclear plants was discussed during Trump’s call with President Zelensky, though the Ukrainian leader later clarified the proposal only applied to Zaporizhzhia.
After the call, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed the idea, saying American control would offer the best protection for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Russia seized Zaporizhzhia shortly after invading Ukraine in February 2022 and has held it ever since. While the plant stopped producing electricity in 2022, it still requires constant power to cool an active reactor.
