Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani has told the European Union it’s time to lift what she calls “unfair” sanctions against her country.
Speaking alongside Latvia’s President Edgars Rink?vi?s, Osmani said the EU must also speed up Kosovo’s path toward candidate status.
“It’s time these unfair measures are dropped. Kosovo deserves progress and recognition,” she said during a joint press conference.
Rink?vi?s agreed the sanctions should be removed but warned that full candidate status by the end of the year may be difficult to secure.
Osmani also pushed back against an EU-backed plan to create an association of Serb-majority municipalities in Kosovo, saying it would not pass constitutional checks or meet EU standards.
She accused Serbia of destabilising the region and said Kosovo has faced aggression aimed at annexation in the north of the country.
“Dialogue is the only path forward,” Rink?vi?s added, urging both Kosovo and Serbia to remain engaged for the sake of EU integration.
The two presidents also highlighted the need for stronger defence cooperation.
