Following the certification of election results, Kosovo faces a tight legal timeframe for forming its new government.
The Central Election Commission’s certification triggers deadlines for the new parliament to convene and elect its leadership, before a government is formed.
Within 30 days, newly elected MPs must swear in and elect a speaker and deputy speakers. The outgoing parliament’s leadership must convene five days prior to organise the session. The session is chaired by the oldest and youngest MPs.
Once parliament is constituted, the president must invite the winning party or coalition to form a government within 15 days.
If the winning party, in this case Vetëvendosje, fails to secure 61 parliamentary votes, the second-placed party or any candidate with 61 votes can attempt to form a government within 10 days.
Failure to form a government after two attempts will trigger new elections within 40 days.
