Albania’s Democratic Party has officially requested a postponement of the Giro d’Italia stage set to take place in the country on May 11, 2025, citing concerns over its overlap with parliamentary elections. Party spokesperson Genta Vangjeli argued that the event, which requires significant police resources, could disrupt election security.
The Albanian government has allocated €7 million from the state’s reserve fund to host the first three stages of the renowned cycling race, with Tirana, Durrës, and Vlora included in the itinerary. The final stage in Albania coincides with the election date set by the president.
The opposition insists that new dates should be negotiated to ensure that state institutions, including law enforcement, remain fully focused on the electoral process.
