ALBANIA has undergone a “day and night” transformation, according to Prime Minister Edi Rama, who claims his Socialist Party’s decade-long rule has reshaped the nation.
Speaking in his Q&A session Sy m’sy, Rama declared that Albania today is unrecognizable compared to ten years ago— or even to last year.
“Just rub your eyes and look back,” he urged Albanians, insisting that the country has seen dramatic progress despite facing a devastating earthquake in 2019 and a global pandemic.
Lights on, debts down
Recalling the state of the nation in 2013, Rama painted a bleak picture of an Albania drowning in debt, plagued by power cuts, and with stalled infrastructure projects.
“When we took office, there was no light— literally! The country was in darkness, and energy debts were catastrophic,” he said.
Public works had ground to a halt. “No machines were running on construction sites because of unpaid debts. Roads were abandoned, with ribbon-cutting ceremonies but no real projects in motion,” he added.
Hospitals were also in crisis, struggling to stock medicine because suppliers weren’t getting paid.
A new dawn for Albania
Despite these setbacks, Rama claims his administration has pulled the country back from the brink, with economic growth, tourism booms, and EU accession progress proving Albania’s rise.
“We’ve already opened several doors in the EU process, with two more set to open in March and April,” he revealed.
While acknowledging there’s still work to do, Rama insists Albania today is just the beginning of a much bigger transformation.
“Albania in 2030? It’s simply the dawn of a new era,” he declared.
