Prime Minister Edi Rama has blasted the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erjon Veliaj, calling it “shocking” and “unfair.” Veliaj’s wife, Ajola Xoxa, has been hit with house arrest.
Rama ripped into the investigation, accusing authorities of targeting the mayor without a trial. “You can’t press charges without a court,” he said. He also slammed the treatment of those questioned, comparing it to a nightmare straight out of Franz Kafka’s books.
The case, sparked by an anonymous complaint, has spiraled into a bizarre 400-page investigation. “Now they’re even going after a 6-year-old kid,” Rama said, referring to the couple’s child caught in the mess.
The Prime Minister was furious about the lack of consistency in the justice system. “It’s crazy that they treat the mayor, his wife, and their young child like criminals with no proof,” he fumed.
While Rama says some crimes are worth investigating, he dismissed the media’s claims as nonsense. “These crimes are nothing. People should’ve been held accountable before, but they’re not even serious now,” he said.
