A protest was held in Albania’s capital on Tuesday evening, fueled by public outrage over the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj on corruption and money laundering charges. The rally, organized by opposition parties, civic movements, and activists, demanded the resignation of both Veliaj and Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Protesters gathered outside the Prime Minister’s office on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, holding banners featuring images of Rama and Veliaj, calling for their removal from office. Speakers at the protest urged prosecutors and judges to fully investigate Veliaj’s alleged wrongdoings.
“This is not just a political struggle; it’s a fight for the citizens of Albania,” the protest leaders declared.
The demonstration was the latest in a series of actions protesting corruption in the Tirana Municipality, with Veliaj at the center of the allegations. Organizers have already addressed the Tirana Municipal Council, urging them to begin procedures for Veliaj’s dismissal.
This protest follows months of public outcry over the corruption claims, with opposition parties, citizens, and activists all demanding that Veliaj step down.
Veliaj, arrested on February 10, strongly rejected the charges, calling the accusations “fabricated” by a “perverse” prosecutor. His wife, Ajola Xoxa, is also facing legal action, placed under house arrest for her alleged involvement in the crimes.
Veliaj, who has led Tirana since 2015, was nominated by the Socialist Party of Albania, headed by Prime Minister Rama.
