NATO has moved to reassure its allies and the public over its peacekeeping presence in Kosovo, following reports suggesting Italy is preparing for a scenario in which US troops may pull out.
In a statement to Insajderi.org, KFOR, NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, confirmed its dedication to regional stability and the alliance’s collective defense efforts. Officials stressed that the US remains committed to NATO, but has called for greater contributions from European allies.
“US officials have made their commitment to the Alliance clear, including their presence in Europe, ensuring NATO’s deterrence and defense remain strong,” a KFOR spokesperson said. “The US expects NATO allies to do more—invest more and produce more—to support our shared security. NATO is always adapting to remain ready.”
The US currently has over 600 troops stationed in Kosovo as part of KFOR’s mission, which operates under the 1999 UN Security Council Resolution 1244. KFOR’s role is to maintain security and ensure freedom of movement in Kosovo, working alongside Kosovo’s police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission.
However, according to German tabloid BILD, intelligence sources suggest Italy is making contingency plans in case Washington withdraws from Kosovo. While President Donald Trump has denied any plans for a full-scale US military exit from Europe, the report claims Italy is gearing up for the possibility.
“According to BILD, Italy is preparing for a potential withdrawal of US troops from Kosovo. If that happens, European allies would be left alone in the Balkans against Putin’s ally, Aleksandar Vu?i?, and Serbia’s increasingly powerful army,” the report stated.
Though the speculation remains unconfirmed, concerns over the future of US military engagement in Europe are growing. If the US were to scale back its commitment, European NATO members could face mounting pressure to bolster security efforts in the region.
For now, NATO is keen to maintain its presence. “Our commitment to stability across the Western Balkans is unwavering,” KFOR officials said. “KFOR continues to carry out its mandate impartially, ensuring security for all communities in Kosovo.”
