Tirana mayor Erion Veliaj has been arrested in a dramatic anti-corruption raid.
Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution (SPAK) issued the warrant, ordering Veliaj’s detention on corruption charges.
Agents from the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH) escorted him from Tirana’s City Hall after a court ruled he should remain in custody.
Meanwhile, prosecutors have also sought house arrest for his wife, Ajola Xoxa.
The case marks another major blow in Albania’s widening anti-corruption crackdown.
