The European Union has called on Serbia to take immediate action and bring to justice those responsible for the deadly attack in Banjska, northern Kosovo, in autumn 2023. A spokesperson for the EU stressed that Serbia is obligated to cooperate with the investigation.
On September 24, 2023, armed Serb attackers ambushed Kosovo police in Banjskë, killing one officer. Three attackers were also killed in the subsequent gunfight. Kosovo blames Serbia for the assault, but Serbia denies any involvement.
Milan Radoiçiq, former deputy leader of the Serbian List party, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Kosovo’s Special Prosecutor’s Office charged Radoiçiq and 44 others with the armed assault. Serbia, however, refuses to extradite him, insisting he will face trial in Serbian courts.
The EU reiterated that Serbia’s progress toward European Union membership depends on the normalization of relations with Kosovo and upholding the rule of law.
