Kosovo wakes up to a historic celebration today as the country marks 17 years since its declaration of independence. The streets of Pristina are filled with patriotic spirit, as state leaders and citizens come together to honor this milestone.
This morning, the national flag was raised in a solemn ceremony, followed by tributes at key memorials, including the Monument to the Missing and the Memorial to Murdered Children. Leaders also paid respects at the grave of former President Ibrahim Rugova, a pivotal figure in Kosovo’s fight for freedom.
A hard-fought independence
On February 17, 2008, Kosovo’s Assembly declared independence with an overwhelming majority, despite a boycott from Serbian representatives. Since then, 117 countries have recognized Kosovo as an independent state, though challenges remain on the international stage.
Messages of support
Albanian leaders have joined in the celebrations, sending messages of solidarity:
Edi Rama: “Good morning, Kosovo! Happy Independence Day and prosperity always!”
Bajram Begaj: “Honor forever to the thousands who sacrificed for freedom and independence!” Ilir Meta: “Kosovo is a pillar of peace and democracy in the Balkans. We stand firm in defending its independence!”
