Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Albanian Prime Minister’s office in Tirana on Wednesday, demanding action against corruption following the arrest of Mayor Erion Veliaj. The demonstration, organized under the slogan “In Support of the Fight Against Corruption,” is the latest in a series of protests sparked by the mayor’s detention.
Protesters carried banners with slogans such as “Corrupt Officials in Prison” and “No Justice, No EU,” calling for accountability. Speakers emphasized that Veliaj’s arrest marked a positive step for justice in Albania and urged citizens to stand with the cause.
The protest is part of a wider movement organized by opposition parties, activists, and MPs, condemning corruption within the Tirana Municipality and demanding Veliaj’s resignation.
Veliaj, who has been Mayor of Tirana since 2015, was arrested on February 10 on charges of corruption and money laundering. He remains in custody while his wife, Ajola Xoxa, faces a travel ban and is under investigation for her role in the case.
The protests have been growing over recent months, with calls for transparency and an end to corruption at the highest levels of government.
