Food prices are SPIKING in Albania as farming struggles lead to less local produce, forcing costly imports and making life more expensive.
Out of 41 essential food items, 29 became more expensive between December 2023 and 2024, according to INSTAT. Meat, dairy, and vegetables—once affordable—are now much pricier.
Beef costs 95.4 leks more per kilo, lamb 80 leks more, and honey 80 leks more per liter. Cheese is up 54 leks/kg, butter 44 leks/kg, and olives 43 leks/kg. Even WINE and BEER are getting pricier!
Why? Farmers are raising fewer animals and abandoning land, meaning less local food. At the same time, TOURISM is increasing demand. With fewer local products available, imports have filled the gap—but at higher prices.
Not all food got more expensive. ORANGES dropped 25.6 leks, and apples, onions, and peppers also became cheaper. Fuel prices fell too, following global trends.
Still, overall food costs have OUTPACED wage and pension increases, making it harder for families to keep up. With no solution in sight, Albania’s food crisis is getting worse.
