BELGRADE, JAN 30 – THOUSANDS of Serbian students took to the streets today, marching 75 kilometers from Belgrade to Novi Sad to demand justice after a deadly train station collapse that killed 15 people. The students are furious, blaming the government for the tragedy, which they say was caused by corruption and shoddy construction.
The protests – the biggest Serbia’s seen in YEARS – have sent shockwaves through President Aleksandar Vu?i?’s regime. “We won’t stop until our demands are met,” said Tatjana Gogic, a biology student leading the charge.
Prime Minister Miloš Vu?evi? has already resigned, but the pressure’s mounting for Vu?i?, who faces calls for early elections. “We’re fighting for justice,” said Vasilije Milanovi?, another student. “We won’t back down.”
Many in Serbia believe the collapse was caused by corruption tied to government deals with Chinese companies handling major infrastructure projects.
